Half of my life has been spent in the country and the other half has been spent in major metropolises. I have now settled with my wife and children in a small town nestled amidst some of the most superb countryside… something that I take time to appreciate everyday. I realize that almost all of the NosVies contributors have made similar lifestyle choices. Interacting with metropolitan centers from the sanctity of the countryside is certainly a more human and idyllic lifestyle.
From time to time, I find myself having to don my city duds to go get the job done in the megalopolis. On a recent trip, I had a revelation.
One morning I found myself sandwiched into a subway car during rush hour. I scanned the sea of closed and withdrawn faces that surrounded me for what seemed like an eternity. I have to say that, in those few moments, my initial optimism and happy mood slowly dissipated to give way to an overwhelming sense of unease. I suddenly realized that, not so long ago, I had probably been one of those gloomy, empty faces.
Luckily, this epidemic has not spread to everyone and I was able to discern a few smiling faces reaching out to me from the crowd.
This brush with urban reality inspired me to write about the contagious effect of human attitudes, both positive and negative. These brief articles will remind us that people affect each other with their attitude more than we realize. So why not let the impact be from positive attitudes?

The link when you click on the drawing sullen or smiling seems wrong. It does not open the drawing for printing. I´d love to post that drawing at the office. Not that my fellow Brazilian co-workers especially need help to be positive. I think all of us need that kind of reminder all the time - even those who start from a good base of joyfulness!

Yes, the whole idea of these creative cartoons is to be a visual reminder to help us switch to the right side when we are drained to the other one…
